Portrait painting

Painted portraits have a life of their own that comes from deep in the soul of the painter and where the machine can’t go. The more photographs one looks at, it seems to me, the more one feels this."
Vincent Van Gogh

I love photography, but there’s something about translating an image into paint on a canvas that turns it from a record to a relic. Wherever possible I take time to get to know my subject, either by meeting in person or speaking on the phone. I also like to ask for descriptions of them from other people who know them well. I paint with a list of words taped to the edge of the canvas describing the person’s character, values and strengths, in the hope some of that comes through in the final portrait. I paint in oil paints on canvas and my work can be commissioned in a range of sizes. For more information about my process and prices, get in touch.
