From pub to homes - a mural to honour a community’s historic past
What the neighbours said…
“Looks great, reminds me of the old days.”
“Love it and thank goodness we’ve got the correct spelling back!”
“Looks amazing .. it was great to see it back to Fleur de Lys... Well done”
“It looks beautiful ! Great job!”
“Looks amazing. Beautiful work”
When a derelict pub in the village of Pucklechurch was restored and converted into houses, the planning consent stipulated the old pub sign must be replaced.
Research showed the spelling of the pub had changed over the years from Fleur de Lys to Fleur de Lis, which was unpopular with residents.
I needed to create a design that harked back to its sociable past, restored the original spelling and used a more traditional fleur de lys symbol, instead of the flower the pub had had in recent years.
Conversions of this type are often controversial but the new sign was warmly welcomed by villagers on the day I painted it and afterwards on the village Facebook group, helping, in small part, to pave the way for the building’s new incarnation as homes for local people.
